hunters. more than a million of you have logged on to our website to read them. what we've gotten him to reveal, a brand new clue once a month starting today. so your journey for your treasure begins this morning. >> it's going to get crowded in new mexico after that, no question. and so many people fascinated by last month's westminster dog show. now a serious side of that. a mystery tied to one of the dogs that competed. it's been found dead. there are some starting claims about poisoning. coming up, that dog's owner speaks out. let us start with today's sequester deadline and the battle between the white house and bob woodward. kristen welker is in washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. that fight between the white house and bob woodward has been brewing all week. it really started last sunday, when woodward wrote an op-ed, saying that president obama moved the goalpost in the sequester fight, at first saying tax increases should be off the
7:01 am
table and now asking for new revenue. woodward says the white house is trying to shut him down. the white house says that's just not true. now the exchange is becoming heated. veteran journalist bob woodward isn't backing down in his criticism of the obama white house. on fox news thursday night, woodward again described a testy phone call last month with the president's economic adviser, gene sperling. >> it was a half hour in which he was shouting at me. >> reporter: all week, woodward has complained that sperling crossed the line, in suggesting via e-mail that woodward would regret reporting that president obama moved the goalpost in the sequester fight. >> he said that i'm going to regret, you know, that's -- that's -- that goes into the coded, you know, you better watch out. >> reporter: the white house denies there was any kind of threat thursday, pointing to a leaked e-mail that sperling sent
7:02 am
to woodward after they talked. quote, i apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today, but as a friend, i think you will regret staking out that claim. >> the fact of the matter is there was an accusation that gene had been threatening. i think everybody who knows gene knows that's hard to believe. >> reporter: a washington sideshow, as the sequester, those $85 billion in cuts takes effect. today, congressional leaders meet with president obama at the white house, but it may be too little, too late, with both sides dug in. >> we want solutions. republicans want sequestration. >> they haven't passed a plan. it's time for them to pass a plan. >> reporter: house members headed out of town thursday as the senate voted on two last-minute alternative plans. both failed. the senate chaplain, tailoring his prayer, seeming to ask for an end to the gridlock. >> god, and save us from ourselves. >> reporter: while it's technically too late to shut off the sequester, president obama
7:03 am
and congressional leaders will try to get on a path toward finding a solution as quickly as possible when they meet later today. one important point, matt, many of those disruptions, like worker furloughs, don't officially go into effect for about a month. >> kristen welker at the white house, thank you very much. bob woodward is with us exclusively now. good morning. how are you doing? >> good morning, matt. how are you? >> i'm fine, thank you. these high-energy, high octane moments happen all the time between officials and the people who cover them. you felt the heat before. why did you go public with this one? >> i didn't go public. politico came and asked me in a long hour interview about how i decided and what the interactions was to write that op-ed piece, calling the obama administration out, pointing out how the president had said congress was the one that
7:04 am
proposed the sequestration, these automatic spending cuts. it turns out that's not true. the white house has finally acknowledged that. they made a deal in 2011 that they wouldn't have to go back and negotiate with the republicans on the borrowing limit and they moved the goalpost on this. so that's the substance. >> and gene sperling's take on this, and your position on it was that you're wrong in staking out that position. >> no, he's not. he's not disputing the facts. if you read the e-mail, he said we're just not going to see eye to eye on this. >> right. i do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying the potus, president of the united states, asking for revenues, is moving the goalpost. i know you may not believe this, but as a friend -- those are very key words -- i think you will refwret stakieregret staki
7:05 am
claim. >> i've done this for 40 years, matt, had lots of contentious moments with the white house. i never said this was a threat. people can read. it was pointed out that this is a sideshow, which it is. and this is the old trick in the book of making the press or some confrontation with the press the issue rather than what the white house has done here. and there is even the larger issue of these automatic spending cuts, which actually make no sense, as everyone has said. the president is running around the country, saying it's going to bring a human toll to all kinds of people who will lose their jobs and so forth. he is the one who started it. he is the one who proposed it. people need to know that. and that's what the white house is trying to avoid discussion about, quoit frankly. >> in terms of the exchange then, we can agree, no real
7:06 am
harm, no real foul. let's ask the bigger question. what does the fact that these two sides are still pointing fingers at each other even as the sequester kicks in tonight at 11:59 or so, what does it tell us about the dynamic we're going to see between this white house and republican leaders in congress over the next four years? >> that's the question. and if you look at these automatic spending cuts, $85 billion, these are in the accounts like department of defense, some of the domestic programs. they don't even really touch the entitlement programs, medicare, medicaid, social security that everyone, including the president -- when i talked to the president over the summer for the book, he said it is that we get some control on spending over these entitlement programs, but this sequester really doesn't touch them. we have got a level of
7:07 am
dysfunction within the dysfunction. they can't talk. now there is some -- like i can share with you some news about this. they certainly aren't going to solve it when they meet today, as i understand, but some senators like lindsey graham have proposed going back, accepting new revenue under tax reform. they're going to give the white house some things that are very dear to the president, quite likely. whether this takes hold, whether this becomes a real solution to the problem, we don't know. but at least it's a start. >> a step in the right direction. bob, thanks for your time this morning. >> thank you. >> i appreciate it. >> thank you. now here's natalie. >> matt, thank you. david gregory is the moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you, david. >> hi, natalie. how are you? >> i'm great. let's start with your reaction of what you just heard from bob woodward, not with the sequester
7:08 am
just yet but the pushback from the white house. other administrations over the years and as part of the white house press corps i imagine you have had your share of nasty e-mails and phone calls. >> right, i've heard some nasty stuff and bob woodward has heard a lot of nasty stuff that goes beyond this, of course, in his 40 years. bob in his reporting has staked out very clear ground where he is challenging the administration. the administration doesn't like it. you've seen this pushback. all administrations push back hard especially when they're dealing with a high octane reporter and a top-notch reporter like bob woodward. that's just reality in washington. people should want that out of a press corps, particularly covering the white house at any particular level. there is a larger here, that the president does not particularly like the washington press corps and i think that feeling is mutual in a lot of respects. there's not a great relationship between that washington establishment and the president. that, too, by the way, is not
7:09 am
unprecedented. i think some of these tensions play out, particularly because i've seen this firsthand. the president -- a lot of the president's advisers are frustrated that they feel they don't get the credit they deserve for the willingness to compromise they see on the president's end, that they do not see reciprocated on the part of the republicans. >> right. at 11:59 pm tonight, those cuts are going to go into effect. what happens next? as we heard house speaker john boehner say yesterday, you know, it's now closed. it's an issue that's now closed. it's up to the senate. we saw the senate absolutely did nothing yesterday with this. they managed to fail on two competing bills. what happens now? >> well, nothing immediately. that's a key point. they'll meet today at the white house, as you heard matt discussing with bob woodward, congressional leaders and the president. nothing is going to come of this meeting. the president will make his case that the republicans are being unreasonable, that they ought to
7:10 am
consider revenues as part of tax reform and actually apply those to the deficit. they're not going to do that. you know, certainly there will be effects of this if you work for the military and you could be furloughed, if you have a child in head start. some 70,000 out of head start. >> right. >> the truth is that this will be a rolling set of impacts that won't really be evident until over the next 30 days and not everybody will be affected. there is a certain amount of waiting to see how big the political outcry becomes before either side moves. >> we'll be seeing you sunday on "meet the press" and you have house speaker john boehner on as your guest. thanks, david. >> thanks, natalie. >> that should be a fascinating interview. now to the vatican. the catholic church finds its, temporarily, without a leader following that send-off of pope benedict xvi. now the hard work of finding his successor can begin. keir simmons is in st. peter's square. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt.

7:38 am
still, the majority of youtube clips posted are harmless and most are pretty hilarious. another from colorado college earlier this month, signature dancing banana is there in the background. but in the air, on a plane, even a banana has to obey the seat belt sign. the harlem shake is causing some problems overseas as well. group of students in tunisia got into a scuffle with conservative muslims who tried to stop them. the education minister in that country says the students could be expeled and some faculty might lose their jobs. natalie and matt? >> three of the college students from that frisbee team are with us now. good morning to you guys. >> good morning. >> matt, i understand you were the brainchild of this. now, what was your reaction, you

7:40 am
aware of what they were telling us. in essence they were saying everything was a go. we weren't really aware. the video looks shaky, matt's holding a handheld camera. he's not doing a good job of holding it in place. >> i know this is going to make me sound like an old stick in the mud. maybe that's because i am. if you're an elderly passenger on this plane or any other passenger, perhaps afraid of flying to begin with and all of a sudden this happens around you and starts you and someone ends up having a heart attack or passing out, what would we be talking about this morning? do you think we're right up against that line of it's all fun till someone gets hurt? >> for us, it was never about anything more than trying to have fun. >> i know, but what about some unsuspecting passenger on the plane? >> so we were really talking to everybody. as a team, we were spread out across the whole plane, in contact with everyone around us
7:41 am
and it was like we really were in touch with everybody. if something was going on with someone, we would have been ready for it. the flight attendants were in on this. it wasn't the kind of thing where it was just happening. we really were aware of everyone on the plane. >> the flight crew even allowed you to use the p.a. system to tell the other passengers. >> now that the faa is investigating this, do you have any regrets about how this went down? >> no. >> we really were being safe the whole time. so it wasn't about nels anything else than having fun on one of our really important tournaments this year. no regrets. >> gentlemen, i hope you did well on your ultimate frisbee contest, by the way. >> thank you. >> take care, guys. gavin nashbar, connor crowley and matt, thanks. michelle obama opens up about her oscar appearance and why she believes some people found it so controversial.
